How would you describe your personal style? What are some of your favourite fashion and style trends?
I’d say my personal style is classic and refined, with a bit of an edge. I love fashion, as I think it’s such a fascinating way to express yourself. Some of my favourite style trends include military blazers, faux fur coats, and ‘athleisure’ wear (though, perhaps the latter is simply because I live in workout gear!).
How would you describe your collection with BonLook?
The Tessa Virtue x BonLook collection is fresh, yet timeless – clean lines, which offer a simple, sleek look, mixed with fashion-forward elements like pink tortoise, and bold oversized sunglass frames. Most importantly, there are also personal touches added to each design. Like the sunglasses have an unexpected colour pop that sits behind the ear. These subtle, yet meaningful touches were such a fun way to put my own twist on the beautifully constructed BonLook glasses.
What personal inspiration did you pull from in the design of this collection?
The BonLook team certainly made me feel as if the eyewear world was my oyster, giving me free reign to take my designs in any direction I saw fit. I wanted the collection to feel chic, sophisticated, and a tad whimsical. I was very inspired by old Hollywood, so there’s a hint of a vintage vibe brought to life with a sense of modernity. The girl wearing these frames is confident, strong, and ready to take on the world. :)
What made BonLook the right designer for you to work with?
I’ve been a big fan of BonLook’s campaigns for quite some time – there is such a distinct aesthetic, and the company has capitalized on a very unique market in a new, exciting way. I love that they’re a Canadian company, and appreciate how accessible they make quality, stylish eyewear!
What is your style inspiration on-and-off-the-ice/who are some of your style icons?
My mom has such a keen fashion sense, so undoubtedly, I grew up with an appreciation for clothing and accessories thanks to her. I am also a huge Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly fan, so I took a lot of inspiration from their timeless and iconic fashion looks!
What have you been up to during the last few months?
The last few months have been incredibly busy; in fact, there hasn’t really been time to breathe since the Games finished! But, I love to work, and it’s been fulfilling taking on so many new projects. Scott and I have been touring and performing in shows (Japan, Korea, Canada), we have updated and created a new version of our book (to be released this October), and most recently, Scott and I announced that we will co-produce our own skating show, the Thank You Canada Tour (taking place in smaller venues all across the country this fall). I’ve been very good at filling my schedule and making sure every moment of my time is accounted for, but later this summer I will take a vacation with family in the south of France. I can’t wait to decompress, enjoy some quality R&R, and take time to process what really happened in February. ;)
We saw that you did a photoshoot with Vogue Japan! How was the experience?
The entire Vogue experience was a dream come true, beginning to end. The team was phenomenal – wonderfully warm and welcoming, the clothes were to die for, and being on set to watch such top-notch professionals in their element was special. I am so grateful for the opportunity, and know that one day I’ll be showing those images to my grandchildren!
Do you have any plans for this Summer?
This summer, I won’t return to Canadian soil until July 9th. After some media, appearances, and production shoots, I’m looking forward to spending some time with family at my cottage on Lake Huron. I can’t wait to unpack my suitcases and stay put for a while! Scott and I are throwing a “Thank You Ilderton” party on August 4th for the communities that have provided us with so much unwavering support over the years. And finally, we have a lot of work to do to begin preparing our tour!
