Meet Dr. Vangie Tsui
We're talking optometry (and more) with Dr. Vangie Tsui!

A little about Dr. Vangie

Raised in Toronto, Dr. Vangie now resides in Vancouver, British Columbia, where she heads a private optometry practice. When it comes eye health and vision, Dr. Vangie brings a world of perspective to the field.

Dr. Vangie earned her doctorate degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, following an honours science degree from the University of Waterloo. Her areas of interest include specialty contact lenses and refractive surgery management. Moreover, she is board-certified to treat and manage ocular diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. One of her passions is the treatment of binocular vision and its effects related to computer vision syndrome (CVS), a condition that occurs when the eyes focus too long on computers or other digital devices.

On a more personal note, a scare to her father’s eye health kickstarted her career, helping her realize that what she really wanted to do was help people with their vision. And that’s why Dr. Vangie is a great fit for BonLook: she’s committed to helping all patients or clients she helps find their just-right fit. Read our interview below.

What did you do before becoming an optometrist?

I was a flight attendant! In all, I’ve been to 50 countries and there are still so many places I want to discover.

Why did you pursue optometry?

My dad had a retinal tear, which scared me to know how close he was to losing his vision. He had no symptoms and could have lost his sight had he not scheduled his yearly exam. That’s what sparked my passion.

Any misconceptions about your line of work?

Many believe that by wearing glasses or contacts too often, their vision will worsen. But the truth is, this isn’t about their prescription changing rather their point of reference changing after seeing HD vision.

Tell us, what’s your favourite pair of BonLook frames?

I love Tessa Virtue’s collection! Her styles are gorgeous, and I love what she represents.

What’s a question that patients always ask you?

I always get: “what do I do if my eyes feel strained when I’m using the computer?” I recommend this simple exercise, the 20/20/20 rule. Every 20 minutes look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
